The Data Reflects an Increasing Global Demand

Netflix does not release viewing numbers for its shows, but there are several metrics that demonstrate ANNE WITH AN Es increasing popularity and demand.

The Petition

Anne Nation created a petition on November 26, 2019. Since then, the petition has grown rapidly, with its largest rate of increase occurring starting in April 2020, four months after its final season released on Netflix. On May 20, 2020, ANNE WITH AN E’s petition dethroned Sense8, the previous record holder, by surpassing 524,727 signatures (Sense8 got a well-deserved finale special). On July 24, 2020, the petition soared past one million signatures. Media reported that the petition is the Change.org record-holder for an entertainment-related petition. Many secondary petitions have almost 50,000 signatures as well.

Social Media Growth

Amybeth McNulty and Lucas Jade Zumann, the shows primary and secondary leads, have rapidly gained Instagram followers since ANNE WITH AN Es season three premiere on Netflix on January 3, 2020. Amybeth McNulty has gained over 2.5 million followers since Season 3 premiered on Netflix on January 3, 2020. Lucas Jade Zumann has gained over 2 million followers since January 3, 2020.

Because ANNE WITH AN E is a coproduction that airs at different times in Canada and globally, it has two official Instagram accounts (as well as two Twitter accounts). The CBC account historically had more followers, but the Netflix account overtook it sometime before the season three premiere on CBC. The Netflix account has only 60 posts, yet has more followers than Atypical (519k and 129 posts), Lost in Space (133k and 93 posts) and Locke and Key (228k and 138 posts).

The Netflix account last posted in January 2020. The CBC account last posted in February 2020. Despite the lack of posts, the Netflix account has continued to rapidly gain followers and hit 1 million followers on June 18, 2020. Together, the two accounts have over 1.8 million followers. What a waste of followers! Seriously, Netflix, call us. We are happy to promote your show.

Search Trend Interest

ANNE WITH AN E has steadily increased in global search traffic since it first premiered in 2017. Its current search traffic is higher now than on November 25, 2019, when fans trended at number one worldwide on Twitter with two million #renewannewithane tweets in 24 hours.

ANNE WITH AN Es global search traffic is rising rapidly, over five months after its final season on Netflix.

ANNE WITH AN Es global search traffic is trending upward over the past 90 days, months after its new season on Netflix.

ANNE WITH AN E is recently extremely popular in Turkey, Brazil and Latin America, areas in which many streaming networks are trying to grow subscriptions. Its search traffic in these regions over the last 90 days is higher than many heavily promoted Netflix originals, such as Ozark and Tiger King.

Comparison to Other Netflix Originals

ANNE WITH AN E has higher global search traffic than other Netflix originals that released new seasons in Q1 2020. Many of these shows received more promotion than ANNE WITH AN E, and many of them have higher production costs.

Notably, ANNE WITH AN E maintained higher search traffic worldwide even when the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina was cancelled in July 2020.

ANNE WITH AN E has higher global search traffic than other Netflix originals that were renewed, for final seasons or otherwise, in 2019 and 2020.

ANNE WITH AN E has consistently higher global search traffic than One Day at a Time, which Netflix canceled in spring 2019. Notably, Netflix released a statement apologizing for the cancelation and stating that the numbers didn’t justify another season. Netflix eventually bowed to pressure and released the rights to the show, which is currently airing a new season on PopTV.
